Formed in 2014 in Southend-on-Sea Josh Hixson, George Rutherford, Ellis Davis and Shaun Bowie had a love for genre’s of music unfamiliar with their sixth form peers. While many around them were falling in love with the mainstream, the boys were struggling to find new music to their tastes and began the band out of their love for playing alternative music.
As a band they began covering REM and Neil Young before starting to write their own music. After a couple of years of writing and playing the local Essex circuit, the band found a fierce, raw and powerful performance style which found the attention of longtime Real World studios producer and mix engineer Ali Staton. Ali invited them to write and record at the infamous Rockfield Studios in South Wales. Humbled by the idea of recording in the birthplace of favourite albums such as Coldplay’s Parachutes and experiencing something new, the band accepted.
During the recording process the bands eyes were opened to the songwriting skill they had as a four, playing with instruments such as organs, mellotrons and being able to make as much or as little noise as they wanted to achieve a sound satisfactory.Out of this process came their debut single I’m Older, which was to be released alongside a music video directed by David Morris(Coldplay, Ben Howard). The first Rockfield Studios experience enabled the band to experience new methods of songwriting as well as play with different sounds. This saw in their next few singles Loose Hearts, Easy To Love, Falling Out Of The Bed and Brother. Songs individually very different textures but retaining their Collier sound.
Now set with multiple future releases, live experience and touring on the horizon – The Collier have plenty to look forward to, and plenty of opportunity to make 2019 their own.
